Picture it………I am wearing my dressing gown, an oversized t-shirt, pyjama bottoms that need to be binned pronto, fluffy socks that don’t match, a tissue stuck up my nose due to constant sneezing and my hair is standing on end with grey roots to add to the beauty that is moi as I fall out of bed. It is the usual school morning madness when James stops, looks at me laughing and comments on how this is the view that they have to look at each day but it was quickly followed with, but you’re our mum and that is all that matters. Oh, he most certainly knows how to tug at the heart strings.
It struck a cord with me because this week I seem to have noticed the ‘you are enough’ quotes quite a bit. Then I listened to a youtube video with this mum who wasted so much time worrying whether or not she was enough for her kids that she forgot to actually enjoy any of it.
Your children don’t really care deep down whether or not they have the latest gadget, go on expensive holidays, have a wardrobe full of clothes or have a bedroom that looks like something from a magazine – well ok, some do care but the majority of kids aren’t that bothered. I used to worry that I wouldn’t be smart enough for them or have exciting stories about all the crazy things I did growing up or how I travelled all over the globe – I imagined they would have looked at me as if I was sooo boring but THEY DON’T CARE!
Whether you are tall, small, fat, thin, outrageous, quiet, sporty, musical, stressed, negative or positive, your children do not care – all they care about is that they are loved no matter what and that you are their mum because in their eyes you are simply the best.
